Socket types, circuits and installation detail
The right answer depends on the room, the circuit and what is being plugged in. These are the variables that get decided on the day.
Single, double and USB sockets
Doubles are the sensible default almost everywhere: the cost difference over a single is negligible and it halves the chance of an extension lead appearing later. USB and USB-C integrated sockets are now standard in bedrooms, kitchens and home offices, and remove the charger clutter from the worktop.
Finish is a genuine choice: white moulded, brushed steel, matt black and screwless variants all fit the same back boxes, and the depth of the back box matters more than the faceplate when it comes to a flush, square fit.

Ring circuits, radials and spurs
Most UK socket circuits are rings; some, particularly in newer or partially rewired properties, are radials. Extending either requires knowing which you have, what protective device serves it and how much of the property it already covers.
A fused spur is a legitimate way to add a point in the right circumstances. Spurring off an existing spur, or adding several unfused spurs to a ring, is not, and it is one of the most common defects found during an EICR.
Kitchens and high-demand areas
Kitchens concentrate the heaviest domestic loads into a few metres of worktop: kettle, toaster, microwave, air fryer, dishwasher, washing machine. Adding sockets here without assessing the circuit is how a nuisance-tripping kitchen is created.
Fixed appliances are best supplied through switched fused connection units with accessible isolation, so the machine can be isolated without dragging it out of its housing.
Outdoor and garage sockets
Outdoor sockets must be weatherproof rated, positioned clear of standing water, and protected appropriately. Where a garage or outbuilding needs more than an occasional point, a dedicated supply with its own protection is usually the better answer than extending an internal circuit.

Cable routes, zones and making good
Buried cable runs in permitted zones: vertically and horizontally from the accessory, and around the perimeter, so anyone drilling later has a reasonable expectation of where cables are. Where a chase is not practical, surface trunking is used and run straight and level rather than draped.
Making good is part of the job. Boxes set flush, chases filled, dust controlled and the room left clean. It is the single most repeated compliment in the reviews and it is deliberate.
Replacing a socket that has overheated
A scorched or discoloured socket is replaced, but the more important question is why. Loose terminals, an overloaded circuit or a failing appliance all produce the same mark, and only one of them is fixed by a new faceplate.
Where heat damage is found, the connections either side are checked and the circuit tested. If the same pattern appears at several accessories, that points towards an EICR rather than a series of replacements.
When it is time for a new circuit or a rewire
If a room needs several new points, or the existing circuit is already at its limit, a new dedicated circuit from the board is often cheaper and better than repeatedly extending.
